Urea: is a substance with humectant properties and part of the natural skin moisturizing factor (NMF: Natural Moisturizing Factor), a group of organic substances lying beneath the stratum corneum, having the task of binding and retaining water in the extreme superficial layers of the epidermis. Since in the various dry skin situations its concentration tends to decrease, with the possibility of dehydration and further cracking occurring, topical application is useful for providing continuous hydration, a key factor for the maintenance of the plasto - elastic properties of the skin. Moreover, even in low concentrations, urea allows for a keratolytic reaction of the stratum corneum, loosening the adherence of the corneocytes, encouraging exfoliation and the exposure of the underlying, more hydrated, softer and smoother cell layer. This process contributes to cell renewal and helps in the healing process of the skin.
Vitamin E: is a fat-soluble vitamin, contained in the formulation of products for topical use due to its many properties, useful for keeping the connective tissue in optimal conditions. Firstly, Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant: acting by interrupting the oxidative chain and conferring stability to the biological membranes, protecting the cellular structures from damage caused by free radicals derived from oxygen and from the reaction products of lipid peroxidation. Moreover, it exerts a beneficial effect on the ability of self-moisturizing of the skin, preventing dryness and atrophy and making the skin supple. Being a hydrophobic oily substance, in part it remains on the skin surface, creating a film to prevent the loss of water and in part, it penetrates into the stratum corneum, helping to maintain the lipid bilayer, the natural barrier of the skin against dehydration.
Hyaluronic acid: is a polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycans group and is a major component of the connective tissue. It acts as a humectant in the skin: thanks to its high hydrophilicity, it binds and retains a large number of water molecules, ensuring the natural moisturizing of the skin. It is useful in topical products as it forms a thin film that keeps the skin smooth and moisturized. Since it plays an important structural role together with collagen and elastin, when applied to the skin, its smaller molecules are able to penetrate, giving structure and firmness to the tissues.
Red algae: their use in cosmetics has been known since ancient times. Consisting of long chains of polysaccharides, they have an emollient, soothing and protective effect. They are also rich in nutrients, helping to tone and deeply moisturize the skin. The gel extracted from red algae is used in topical products for its ability to create a protective film surface, facilitating the application of the product on the skin and increasing hydration and bioavailability of the active substances.
Aloe: the mucilaginous gel extracted from the internal tissues of the leaves of Aloe is used primarily for moisturizing and soothing the skin. Thanks to its richness in mucopolysaccharides, Aloe gel forms a protective film on the skin for an emollient, demulcent and soothing effect. It seems that the phytoconstituents of Aloe are also able to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, encouraging the processes for the maintenance of healthy skin.
